The Altons
In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at eight addresses
The directories print twelve people named Alton at eight addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Altons at 1628 East 33rd in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for eight of the twelve: an accountant, an agent, an attendant, a floor layer, a janitor and a laundress, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Marpole (2), Downtown, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Mount Pleasant and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Miss E Alton at 2305 Alberta Street. The 1940 name section lists Kath Alton at 1101 Burrard Street, a maid at the St Pauls Hospital. The 1940 name section lists Stan H Alton at 230 East 23rd Avenue, an agent for Monarch Life.
A Alton is listed at 1628 East 33rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Arthur Alton there as the householder, a janitor at the Royal Bank Building, with Frances Alton, a laundress, and Irene B Alton. T Alton is listed at 1849 Trafalgar Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Alton there as the householder, a floor layer at BC Hardwood Floor, with John J Alton, an attendant at Standard Oil, and Robert T Alton, a machinist operator at American Can.
R R Alton is listed at 2320 West 1st Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists R Roy Alton there as the householder. W J D Alton is listed at 76 West 59th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William J D Alton there as the householder, an accountant at R Walker.
Mrs E H Alton is listed at 1323 West 64th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Esther H Alton there as the householder, widow of W W.
Today
230 East 23rd, 1628 East 33rd and 1849 Trafalgar still have their buildings from before 1946; 1323 West 64th (1992) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2305 Alberta, 1101 Burrard, 2320 West 1st and 76 West 59th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under A. Want a name removed? Tell us.
