What they did
The name section prints a trade for eight of the ten: an employee (2), an apprentice, a laborer, a maid, an on active service and an operator, among others. Some worked for the same employer: two for Vancouver Breweries and two for Vancouver City. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), West End (2), Kitsilano, Marpole, Mount Pleasant and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A E Allam, rooms to let, at 748 Burrard Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Alice E Allam there, widow of A R, with Dorothy Allam, a maid for A H Rathie. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs G Allam at 3542 Cambridge Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Mrs Gwen Allam there as the householder, a stenographer at the City of Vancouver, with Thomas E Allam.
The 1940 name section lists Lillian A Allam at 1167 Comox Street, an operator at Standard Brands. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Allam at 2175 East 61st Avenue, an apprentice for J T Taylor. The 1940 name section lists Charles Allam at 404 East 7th Avenue, a laborer at the City of Vancouver.
J A Allam is listed at 7836 French Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John A Allam there as the householder, who worked for Vancouver Breweries. The 1940 name section lists Edward T Allam at 75 North Slocan Street, on active service.
In 1940 the directory lists A F Allam at 2226 West 14th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists A Frederick Allam there as the householder, who worked for Vancouver Breweries.
Today
3542 Cambridge, 75 North Slocan and 2226 West 14th still have their buildings from before 1946; 2175 East 61st (2000) and 7836 French (1971) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 748 Burrard, 1167 Comox and 404 East 7th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

The book of the Allams
Every directory, as one book
The family book reads the Allam name in each Vancouver directory we hold from 1901 to 1945: everyone printed under it at every address, their work from the name sections, who lived next door, and the page behind every line, to read here or save as a PDF to print or give.

Another name, or a house
Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under A. Want a name removed? Tell us.
