What they did

The name section prints a trade for eleven of the 15: a salesman (2), a cashier, a conductor, a domestic, a helper and a porter, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), Kitsilano (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Mount Pleasant, Riley Park, Strathcona and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists T G Addison at 23 East 16th Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Thomas G Addison there as the householder, a roofer at Campbell & Grill. In 1940 the directory lists W D Addison at 457 East 44th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists William D Addison there as the householder, a porter at the St Francis Hotel.

In 1940 the directory lists J Addison at 2306 East 5th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Florence Addison there, a domestic. The 1940 name section lists George Addison at 296 Keefer Street, a steward at the Stratford Hotel.

H N Addison is listed at 4689 Mackenzie Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Horace N Addison there as the householder, retired. The 1940 name section lists James N Addison at 1010 Salsbury Drive, a salesman at Gainers.

In 1940 the directory lists C N Addison at 2176 West 7th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Charles N Addison there as the householder, a conductor at the BC Electric Railway, with William Addison, a salesman. In 1940 the directory lists C A Addison at 815 West 8th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Charles A Addison there as the householder, a waiter at the Ambassador Hotel, with Charles C Addison, a helper at Simmons, Irene Addison, a cashier at Broadway Recreations, and Ruth Addison.

The 1940 name section lists Margaret I Addison at 2226 West 8th Avenue, a x-ray assistant at the Vancouver General Hospital. The 1940 name section lists John Addison at 3773 Yukon Street, retired.

Today

2306 East 5th, 1010 Salsbury Drive and 3773 Yukon still have their buildings from before 1946; 4689 Mackenzie (2007) and 2226 West 8th (1967) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 23 East 16th, 457 East 44th, 296 Keefer, 2176 West 7th and 815 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under A. Want a name removed? Tell us.
