Kitsilano, Vancouver

2205 Yew Street

In the city directories 1915–1955.

Between 1915 and 1945 the directories name four households here, none of them listed twice, the first Ernest Bates and the last Mrs A Sealy. In 1940 the name section gives this address for Robert Henderson, a bookkeeper (page 267; joined to the 1940 listing, where the first name or initials agree, inferred).

Who lived here

Read every ten years. Each chapter is one surname at this address across the directories, so it can be more than one family; tap a name for its directory page, or follow the name to every address it's printed at. After 1945 the directories' names aren't shown. *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark, printed from 1935).

The house

A permit to build three frame houses at 2205, 2211 and 2221 Yew, this one among them, was taken out in June 1909 by J E Braithwaite, owner and builder: $3,900 for the three. The address first appears in 1915, with Ernest Bates. The 1925 canvasser found the address occupied but took no name; in 1935 the directory lists J E Harrington. By 1940 the Harrington name has gone and R Henderson is listed. By 1945 the Henderson name has gone and Mrs A Sealy is listed, the name marked * (some member of the family owns the property, to the best of the directory's knowledge).

Today

2205 Yew Street still has a building from before 1946, as does 2211 next door; its permit dates from 1909 and the City's record from 1912, so it is very likely A, one of the three small wood-frame houses Goad's 1912 map draws on one lot (inferred).
