What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the 13: a proprietor (3), a cook, a laundry, a library and a secretary.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Strathcona (7), Downtown (3), Mount Pleasant (2) and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Booke Nooke Ye at 1187 Denman Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Booke Nooke (Mrs F Hetherington, Mrs E L Beach) Ye there, a library. The 1940 name section lists Pong Woo Yee at 207 East Georgia Street, who worked for the George Rooms. The 1940 name section lists Law Yee at 333 East Georgia Street, a secretary at United Fraser Growers.

The 1940 name section lists Jack Yee at 250 East Hastings Street, proprietor of Broadway Tailors. The 1940 name section lists Yae Yee at 344 East Hastings Street. The 1940 name section lists Bing Yee at 37 East Pender Street, proprietor of Sam Lee Laundry. The 1940 name section lists Boy Yee at 176 East Pender Street, who worked for New Star Cafe.

In 1940 the directory lists Shee Mrs Yee at 438 East Pender Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Shee Mrs Yee there as the householder. In 1940 the directory lists C Yee at 714 Jackson Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Charlie Yee there as the householder.

The 1940 name section lists Thoo Koey Yee at 830 Jackson Avenue, a cook. Hop Yee is listed at 2243 Main Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Hop Yee there as the householder, proprietor of J Tong Co. Chung Yee, a laundry, is listed at 605 Robson Street in 1940.

The 1940 name section lists Chung Yee at 346 West 6th Avenue, who ran a laundry.

Today

344 East Hastings and 830 Jackson still have their buildings from before 1946; 605 Robson (1989) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1187 Denman, 207 East Georgia, 333 East Georgia, 250 East Hastings, 37 East Pender, 176 East Pender, 438 East Pender, 714 Jackson, 2243 Main and 346 West 6th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under Y. Want a name removed? Tell us.
