What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the 15: an assistant, an assistant dietitian, a barrister, a checker, a clerk and a dietitian, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), Arbutus Ridge, Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Hastings-Sunrise, Mount Pleasant and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Annie Wynes at 34 East 13th Avenue, widow of J. F H Wynes is listed at 1741 Kitchener Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Frank H Wynes there as the householder, a helper at Crystal Dairy.

J A J Wyness is listed at 2918 Turner Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John A J Wyness there as the householder, a vice-president at Irvine, Simpson & Wyness. A R Wyness is listed at 1862 Venables Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Arthur R Wyness there as the householder, a checker.

H P Wyness is listed at 3635 West 20th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Harvey P Wyness there as the householder, a barrister, with Eleanor J Wyness, a student, Enid S Wyness, a clerk at the BC Government, Don P Wyness, a student, and Patricia M Wyness, an assistant for Dr F S Hobbs. G A Wyness is listed at 2715 West 31st Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Gordon A Wyness there as the householder, a salesman at Rae-Son, with Frances D Wyness, an assistant dietitian at the Vancouver General Hospital, Gordon Y Wyness, an engineer at Burns & Co, and Jean M Wyness, a dietitian.

The 1940 name section lists Jane Wyness at 4397 West 9th Avenue, widow of A. In 1940 the directory lists H P Wyness, a barrister, at 207 West Hastings Street.

Today

2918 Turner, 1862 Venables, 2715 West 31st, 4397 West 9th and 207 West Hastings still have their buildings from before 1946; 1741 Kitchener (1995) and 3635 West 20th (2018) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 34 East 13th, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
