What they did
The name section prints a trade for eight of the eleven: a clerk (2), a bookkeeper, a fire alarm operator, a manager, a managing director and a salesman, among others. Some worked for the same employer: three for Vancouver City, two for BC Chamber of Mines and two for C M Oliver.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in West Point Grey (3), Downtown (2), Hastings-Sunrise and Mount Pleasant. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Erskine G Woodside at 2594 Eton Street, a salesman at Union Oil, with F Maxwell Woodside, a clerk at the City of Vancouver, Sanford S Woodside, a clerk at the BC Chamber of Mines, and Valerie E Woodside, a school teacher. J C Woodside is listed at 2964 Highbury Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists J Clark Woodside there as the householder, a managing director for C M Oliver. The 1940 name section lists Woodside (no first name printed) at 1247 Homer Street.
The 1940 name section lists Frank E Woodside at 518 Richards Street, a manager at the BC Chamber of Mines. Mrs A L Woodside is listed at 450 West 15th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Amy L Woodside there as the householder.
H H Woodside is listed at 3793 West 15th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Harry H Woodside there as the householder, a fire alarm operator at the City of Vancouver, with Lloyd A Woodside, a student at UBC. F P Woodside is listed at 4630 West 7th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Frank P Woodside there as the householder, a bookkeeper for C M Oliver.
Today
2964 Highbury, 518 Richards and 4630 West 7th still have their buildings from before 1946, 518 Richards on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1247 Homer (1999) and 3793 West 15th (2012) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 450 West 15th, so that building is probably gone (inferred); for 2594 Eton, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
