What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the 14: a branch manager, a clerk, a draftsman, a proprietor, a secretary and a stenographer. Three are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Dunbar-Southlands (2), Kerrisdale (2), Kitsilano, Victoria-Fraserview, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Christina Woodman at 1286 Burrard Street, a widow. Mrs M A Woodman is listed at 2088 Cornwall Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Marguerite A Woodman there as the householder, with Verne E Woodman, a draftsman at the Burrard Dry Dock, and W Reginald Woodman. The 1940 name section lists Harry Woodman at 1221 Granville Street.

In 1940 the directory lists O O M Woodman at 5561 Highbury Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Owen O M Woodman there as the householder, a secretary at Bell-Irving Insurance. In 1940 the directory lists J Woodman at 6188 McCleery Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James Woodman there as the householder, proprietor of the Vancouver Art Metal Works, with Carol Woodman, a stenographer.

The 1940 name section lists Elizabeth Woodman at 1148 Thurlow Street, widow of H. The 1940 name section lists Woodman (no first name printed) at 2077 Waverley Avenue. In 1940 the directory lists S J Woodman at 4560 West 11th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Steph J Woodman there as the householder, a clerk at the Customs.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E G Woodman at 2948 West 28th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Ethel G Woodman there as the householder, widow of R E, with Thelma B Woodman, a student. In 1940 the directory lists H F Woodman at 2028 West 47th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Herbert F Woodman there as the householder, a branch manager at Copp The Shoe Man.

Today

1221 Granville and 2948 West 28th still have their buildings from before 1946; 5561 Highbury (2014), 2077 Waverley (1982) and 2028 West 47th (1981) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1286 Burrard, 2088 Cornwall, 6188 McCleery, 1148 Thurlow and 4560 West 11th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
