What they did
The name section prints a trade for eight of the twelve: an on active service (2), a saleswoman (2), a laborer, a laundryman, a machinist and a millworker. Two of them worked for Golden Sheaf Bake Shop. Two are widows, listed under their own names.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Kitsilano, Riley Park, Strathcona and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists J A Woodhouse at 558 East 21st Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John A Woodhouse there as the householder, on active service. In 1940 the directory lists H M Woodhouse at 2380 East 5th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Harold M Woodhouse there as the householder, a laundryman at Swifts, with Gordon P Woodhouse, a millworker, and Josephine D Woodhouse, a saleswoman at Mrs F M Glass.
The 1940 name section lists W Woodhouse at 800 East Hastings Street, a laborer at M B King Lumber. F Woodhouse is listed at 1321 Graveley Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Fred Woodhouse there as the householder, on active service. The 1940 name section lists Sarah J Woodhouse at 3875 Puget Drive, widow of W E.
The 1940 name section lists Ethel M Woodhouse at 3956 West 10th Avenue, who worked for Golden Sheaf Bake Shop, with Joan Woodhouse, a saleswoman at Golden Sheaf Bake Shop. Mrs E Woodhouse is listed at 2147 West 3rd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Emily Woodhouse there as the householder, widow of J.
S H Woodhouse is listed at 1617 West 4th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Syd H Woodhouse there as the householder, a machinist at the CPR, with Wills Woodhouse, a student.
Today
2380 East 5th, 1321 Graveley, 3875 Puget Drive and 1617 West 4th still have their buildings from before 1946; 558 East 21st (1985) and 3956 West 10th (1996) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 800 East Hastings and 2147 West 3rd, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
