A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Wilkies
In the city directories 1940 · 14 people at eight addresses
The directories print 14 people named Wilkie at eight addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: six Wilkies at 1018 Cotton Drive in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for twelve of the 14: a cigar stand, a department manager, a driver, a granite cutter, a joint manager and a laundress, among others. Three of them worked for Vancouver News Agency.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown (3), Grandview-Woodland (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Kitsilano and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists J Wilkie at 1018 Cotton Drive; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists James Wilkie there as the householder, a granite cutter, with Albert A Wilkie, a promotion at the Vancouver News Agency, Edith J Wilkie, a laundress at Star Laundry, George J Wilkie, a joint manager at Collins U Drive, Ken F Wilkie, a shipper at the Vancouver News Agency, and Reginald H Wilkie, a driver at the Vancouver News Agency. The 1940 name section lists Malcolm Wilkie at 337 Dunsmuir Street, a salesman at T Eaton Co.
G Wilkie is listed at 117 East Hastings Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists G Wilkie there, a cigar stand. J A Wilkie, rooms to let, is listed at 1214 Hornby Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John A Wilkie there, who kept rooms to let.
G Wilkie is listed at 2186 Napier Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George Wilkie there as the householder, a plumber. E S Wilkie is listed at 1101 Nicola Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists E Stewart Wilkie there as the householder, a master mariner.
C A Wilkie is listed at 3258 West 35th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Charles A Wilkie there as the householder, a department manager at J W Kelly Piano, with Greig Wilkie, a school teacher. W T Wilkie is listed at 2145 West 8th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William T Wilkie there as the householder.
Today
2186 Napier and 1101 Nicola still have their buildings from before 1946, 1101 Nicola on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 117 East Hastings (1975) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1018 Cotton Drive, 337 Dunsmuir, 1214 Hornby, 3258 West 35th and 2145 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
