The Wights

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at eight addresses

The directories print eleven people named Wight at eight addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Wights at 3325 West 2nd in 1940.

Where the Wights lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the eleven: a driver (2), an advertising, a carpenter and rooms to let, a fire captain, a housekeeper and a laborer, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (4), Arbutus Ridge, Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands and Hastings-Sunrise. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists F Wight, rooms to let, at 1252 Burrard Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Frank Wight there, a carpenter who kept rooms to let. In 1940 the directory lists J Wight at 3574 Oxford Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John Wight there as the householder, a weighman at the Board of Grain Commissioners.

The 1940 name section lists Nellie Wight at 3383 Point Grey Road, a housekeeper for E G Houghton. J Wight is listed at 2465 West 15th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James Wight there as the householder, a fire captain at the City of Vancouver.

J L Wight is listed at 3421 West 28th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists James L Wight there as the householder, in advertising for Northwestern Mutual. The 1940 name section lists Elizabeth M Wight at 3325 West 2nd Avenue, a saleswoman at Spencer's, with Jack Wight, a laborer at Canadian Wood Pipe, and Margaret Wight, widow of A.

In 1940 the directory lists P A Wight at 2820 West 32nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Percy A Wight there as the householder, a driver. In 1940 the directory lists J T Wight at 2544 West 3rd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists James T Wight there as the householder, retired, with George T Wight, a driver at BC Fir.

Today

3574 Oxford, 3383 Point Grey Road, 3421 West 28th and 2544 West 3rd still have their buildings from before 1946; 2465 West 15th (1987) and 2820 West 32nd (2015) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1252 Burrard and 3325 West 2nd, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
