What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the twelve: a clerk, a maintenance man, a proprietor, a salesman and a women's clothing. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (3), Hastings-Sunrise (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Victoria-Fraserview and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists G F Whiting at 2764 Charles Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists George F Whiting there as the householder, a maintenance man at Woodward's. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Dorothy Whiteing at 2571 Dundas Street.

E Whiting is listed at 2692 East 46th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edward Whiting there as the householder. H W Whiting, a women's clothing, is listed at 2327 East Hastings Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Henry W Whiting there, in women's clothing.

Mrs J B Whiting is listed at 5468 Ross Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Jean B Whiting there as the householder, widow of F J, with John R Whiting. G A Whiting is listed at 4429 West 10th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George A Whiting there as the householder, proprietor of Point Grey Flower Shop.

F G Whiting is listed at 3542 West 11th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick G Whiting there as the householder, retired. The 1940 name section lists Margaret Whiting at 1825 West 13th Avenue, widow of J A.

In 1940 the directory lists R H N Whiting at 4022 West 34th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists R Hubert N Whiting there as the householder, of Plommer Whiting. In 1940 the directory lists S U Whiting at 1540 Yew Street. The 1940 name section lists Sam U Whiting there as the householder, a salesman, with Jack S Whiting, a clerk at the BC Electric Railway.

Today

2571 Dundas, 2327 East Hastings and 1540 Yew still have their buildings from before 1946; 2692 East 46th (1988) and 5468 Ross (1989) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2764 Charles, 4429 West 10th, 3542 West 11th, 1825 West 13th and 4022 West 34th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
