The directories print 15 people named Whiteside at eleven addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Whitesides at 1961 East 1st in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 15: a proprietor (2), a barrister, a carpenter, a chief clerk, a driver and a lumberman, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (3), Grandview-Woodland (2), West Point Grey (2), Fairview, Kitsilano, Oakridge and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists T Whiteside at 6099 Beatrice Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Thomas Whiteside there as the householder, proprietor of Acme Window Cleaner, with Harold L Whiteside, proprietor of Victoria Garage. In 1940 the directory lists A M Whiteside at 6050 Cartier Street. The 1940 name section lists Arthur M Whiteside there as the householder, a barrister, with Kathleen B Whiteside, a student.

The 1940 name section lists Darcy G Whiteside at 1961 East 1st Avenue, a carpenter, with Frederick B Whiteside, a miner, and Guy P Whiteside, a lumberman. The 1940 name section lists C A Whiteside at 42 East Cordova Street. In 1940 the directory lists A M Whiteside, a barrister, at 470 Granville Street.

E E Whiteside is listed at 1557 Larch Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ernest E Whiteside there as the householder, a driver at Vancouver Breweries. W S Whiteside is listed at 1624 Salsbury Drive in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Walter S Whiteside there as the householder, retired.

R V Whiteside is listed at 4042 West 12th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Richard V Whiteside there as the householder, a representative at Kellogg Co. H A Whiteside is listed at 4264 West 9th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Harry A Whiteside there as the householder, a chief clerk at the Liquor Control Board.

A E Whiteside is listed at 710 West Broadway in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Allan E Whiteside there as the householder, retired. The 1940 name section lists O E S Whiteside at 849 West Georgia Street.

Today

6050 Cartier, 42 East Cordova, 470 Granville, 1557 Larch, 1624 Salsbury Drive and 4264 West 9th still have their buildings from before 1946; 6099 Beatrice (1997) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1961 East 1st, 4042 West 12th, 710 West Broadway and 849 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
