Where the Whitehouses lived

What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the 14: a grocer (2), a saleswoman (2), a delivery, an engineer, a hairdresser and a planerman, among others. Two of them worked for Canadian White Pine. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Mount Pleasant, Riley Park, South Cambie, Sunset and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M E Whitehouse at 6251 Beatrice Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mary E Whitehouse there as the householder, widow of W, with John Whitehouse. In 1940 the directory lists J Whitehouse at 546 East 46th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Joseph Whitehouse there as the householder, a tallyman at Canadian White Pine, with J Leslie Whitehouse, a shipper at Spencer's, and Ray G Whitehouse, a planerman at Canadian White Pine.

The 1940 name section lists Clara Whitehouse at 1060 Granville Street, a hairdresser at Myrtle's Beauty Shop, with R Whitehouse. A Whitehouse, a grocer, is listed at 3742 Main Street in 1940. In 1940 the directory lists E Whitehouse at 2531 Ontario Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edward Whitehouse there as the householder, proprietor of People's Bicycle Shop, with Wilfred D Whitehouse, a delivery at Cornetts Meat Markets.

In 1940 the directory lists S Whitehouse, a grocer, at 1691 Venables Street. The 1940 name section lists Sam Whitehouse there, a grocer. In 1940 the directory lists A Whitehouse at 591 West 17th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Albert Whitehouse there as the householder, a grocer, with Vera Whitehouse, a saleswoman.

In 1940 the directory lists A C Whitehouse at 3464 West 40th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Arthur C Whitehouse there as the householder, an engineer at the Canadian Government. The 1940 name section lists Laura Whitehouse at 2554 Yale Street, a saleswoman.

Today

546 East 46th, 1060 Granville, 3742 Main, 591 West 17th and 2554 Yale still have their buildings from before 1946, 1060 Granville on the Vancouver Heritage Register; the City no longer lists 6251 Beatrice, 2531 Ontario, 1691 Venables and 3464 West 40th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
