What they did
The name section prints a trade for eight of the twelve: a core maker, a delivery, an electrician, an engineer, a janitor and a millworker, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (3), West End (2), Fairview, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Renfrew-Collingwood and South Cambie. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William Wharton at 735 Bidwell Street, a millworker. R J Wharton is listed at 1442 Davie Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Robert J Wharton there as the householder, with Robert Wharton, an electrician, and Eileen Wharton.
J Wharton is listed at 1675 East 37th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John Wharton there as the householder, a core maker at Ross & Howard, with Wesley E Wharton, a delivery. Mrs J Wharton is listed at 3679 Tanner Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Jean Wharton there as the householder, widow of E.
The 1940 name section lists J L Wharton at 1364 West 10th Avenue, a planerman at the Eburne Saw Mills. In 1940 the directory lists J H Wharton at 2415 West 10th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John H Wharton there as the householder, an engineer at the CPR.
In 1940 the directory lists A Wharton at 683 West 19th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Albert Wharton there as the householder, a janitor at the Grace Hospital. The 1940 name section lists Alfred H Wharton at 3954 West 29th Avenue, a teacher at the St Georges School.
G T Wharton is listed at 3449 West 42nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George T Wharton there as the householder, retired. R Wharton is listed at 3811 West 49th Avenue in 1940.
Today
2415 West 10th, 683 West 19th and 3449 West 42nd still have their buildings from before 1946; 1675 East 37th (1999) and 1364 West 10th (1958) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1442 Davie, 3679 Tanner, 3954 West 29th and 3811 West 49th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred); for 735 Bidwell, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
