The directories print 18 people named Westwood at nine addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Westwoods at 2778 East 41st in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the 18: a clerk (3), a carpenter, a garageman, a laundress, a longshoreman and a manager, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), West End (2), Downtown, Grandview-Woodland, Strathcona, Sunset and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Joseph Westwood at 233 Abbott Street, retired. W Westwood is listed at 1531 Adanac Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Williamson Westwood there as the householder, a longshoreman, with Ina T Westwood, and John T Westwood, a millworker at Hammond's.

Miss M Westwood is listed at 1835 Barclay Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mary Westwood there as the householder, who worked for the YWCA. R K Westwood is listed at 2778 East 41st Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Robert K Westwood there as the householder, a carpenter, with Colin A Westwood, a garageman at Begg Motor, Margery A Westwood, a school teacher, and Robert D Westwood, a clerk at the Bank of Nova Scotia.

The 1940 name section lists W T P Westwood at 431 East Georgia Street. In 1940 the directory lists F W Westwood at 1444 Kamloops Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frank W Westwood there as the householder, a manager at the Glen Hospital.

In 1940 the directory lists W W Westwood at 2626 McGill Street. The 1940 name section lists Wilson W Westwood there as the householder, a clerk at Spencer's. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs J M Westwood at 6550 Ross Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Jessie M Westwood there as the householder, widow of W G, with Mary J Westwood, a student, and Ona G Westwood, a laundress at Peerless Laundry.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs F N Westwood at 1148 Thurlow Street. The 1940 name section lists Fanny N Westwood there as the householder, widow of M T C, with Fanny N Westwood, a clerk at the BC Telephone.

Today

233 Abbott, 2778 East 41st, 1444 Kamloops and 2626 McGill still have their buildings from before 1946, 233 Abbott on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1835 Barclay (1986) and 6550 Ross (1988) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1531 Adanac, 431 East Georgia and 1148 Thurlow, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
