The Wellers

In the city directories 1940 · 15 people at nine addresses

The directories print 15 people named Weller at nine addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Wellers at 1055 Comox in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the 15: a box maker, a boxmaker, a domestic, a driver and a managing director. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (2), West End (2), Downtown, Hastings-Sunrise, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano and Shaughnessy. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mrs Edna Weller at 2836 Alder Street. Miss A Weller is listed at 1055 Comox Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Annie Weller there as the householder, a box maker for Pioneer Envelopes, with Katie M Weller, a boxmaker at Davies Paper Box. The 1940 name section lists Albert Weller at 1746 Comox Street.

In 1940 the directory lists E R Weller at 2781 Pandora Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Eugene R Weller there as the householder, a driver at Johnston National Storage. In 1940 the directory lists H Weller at 1625 West 28th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Hyman Weller there as the householder.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A E Weller at 1611 West 45th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Alice E Weller there as the householder, widow of E S, with E George Weller, a managing director at Hazelwood Creamery. In 1940 the directory lists Miss M Weller at 1666 West 6th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Martha Weller there as the householder.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs H Weller at 2290 West 8th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Helen Weller there as the householder, widow of C, with Arthur C Weller, and Nora Weller, a domestic. The 1940 name section lists H Weller at 1040 West Pender Street.

Today

1666 West 6th and 2290 West 8th still have their buildings from before 1946, 2290 West 8th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2781 Pandora (1990) and 1625 West 28th (2018) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2836 Alder, 1055 Comox, 1746 Comox, 1611 West 45th and 1040 West Pender, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
