What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the nine: a dispatcher, a fireman, a grocer, a nurse, a plasterer and a proprietor. Two of them worked for UBC. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (4), Grandview-Woodland and Hastings-Sunrise. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J F Warne, a grocer, at 2894 East Broadway; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John F Warne there, a grocer. The 1940 name section lists John H Warne at 2162 Venables Street, a plasterer.

H J A Warne is listed at 2486 West 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Harold J A Warne there as the householder, a laborer at Pacific Coast Pipe, with Hortense J Warne, a student at UBC, and Lillian Warne, a nurse at the BC Government. T F Warne is listed at 2860 West 16th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Theo F Warne there as the householder, a fireman at the City of Vancouver.

E W Warne is listed at 2275 West 1st Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Ernest W Warne there as the householder, a dispatcher at Arrow Transfer, with Mrs I Patricia Warne, proprietor of Service Coffee Shop. Mrs E G Warne is listed at 2054 Whyte Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Elizabeth G Warne there as the householder, widow of A S, with John W Warne, a student at UBC.

Today

2162 Venables and 2054 Whyte still have their buildings from before 1946; 2486 West 14th (1987) and 2860 West 16th (1988) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2894 East Broadway and 2275 West 1st, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
