What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 15: a clerk (2), a beauty shop, a dealer, a nurse, a porter and a salesman, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (3), Dunbar-Southlands, Marpole, Renfrew-Collingwood, Shaughnessy, Strathcona, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists F H Ware at 6228 Fraser Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Frederick H Ware there as the householder, a dealer for J R Watkins, with Clif A Ware, a school teacher. In 1940 the directory lists C L Ware at 3141 Ivanhoe Street. The 1940 name section lists Charles L Ware there as the householder, a ticker inspector at the CN Telegraphs.

The 1940 name section lists A N Ware at 222 Keefer Street, a porter at the CPR. Mrs M L Ware, rooms to let, is listed at 1173 Nelson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Mabel L Ware there, who kept rooms to let, with G Lorne W Ware, a clerk. The 1940 name section lists Mary J Ware at 3437 Osler Street, a nurse for Dr A L Lynch.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs O F Ware at 2703 West 14th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Olive F Ware there as the householder, with Doris O Ware, who ran a beauty shop. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs Ware at 2225 West 1st Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Ware (no first name printed) there as the householder, a widow.

The 1940 name section lists Sid G Ware at 3586 West 30th Avenue. E A Ware is listed at 1468 West 71st Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ernest A Ware there as the householder, a salesman, with John D Ware, a clerk at the Merritt Gordon Hotel. Miss D O Ware, a beauty shop, is listed at 2185 West Broadway in 1940.

Today

3141 Ivanhoe, 222 Keefer, 2225 West 1st and 3586 West 30th still have their buildings from before 1946; 3437 Osler (1988) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 6228 Fraser, 1173 Nelson, 2703 West 14th, 1468 West 71st and 2185 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
