What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 14: an agent, an apprentice, a chief engineer, a movie operator, a piler and a proprietor, among others. Two of them worked for Eburne Saw Mills. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (4), Mount Pleasant (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J W Wardrop at 359 East 14th Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists James W Wardrop there as the householder, an agent for Mutual Life, with Sarah Wardrop, widow of W J. In 1940 the directory lists T Wardrop at 749 East 26th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Thomas Wardrop there as the householder, a watchman at the Eburne Saw Mills, with Elizabeth S Wardrop, a waitress, and Robert L Wardrop, a piler at the Eburne Saw Mills.

In 1940 the directory lists H J Wardrop at 1768 East 34th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Harold J Wardrop there as the householder, a movie operator. In 1940 the directory lists A R Wardrop at 1352 Kingsway; the 1940 line is marked * too. A R Wardrop, a baker, is listed at 1356 Kingsway in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too.

The 1940 name section lists Mrs Velma Wardrop at 4399 Quebec Street. G A Wardrope is listed at 1176 West 12th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George A Wardrope there as the householder, a chief engineer, with Mrs K Wardrope, proprietor of Merritt Gordon Hotel (Annex).

J W Wardrop is listed at 434 West 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John W Wardrop there as the householder, a hostler at the CPR, with John W Wardrop Jr, an apprentice at the CPR, and Agnes Wardrop. The 1940 name section lists Kath Wardrop at 3008 West 33rd Avenue, widow of R J.

Today

1768 East 34th, 4399 Quebec, 1176 West 12th and 3008 West 33rd still have their buildings from before 1946; 1352 Kingsway (2014) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 359 East 14th, 749 East 26th, 1356 Kingsway and 434 West 14th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
