What they did
The name section prints a trade for six of the eleven: a stenographer (2), a clerk, a mechanic, a principal clerk and a shipper. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in West End (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Kitsilano, Strathcona, Sunset and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William A Warden at 1133 Beach Avenue, a shipper at T Eaton Co. The 1940 name section lists William S Warden at 1921 Collingwood Street, a mechanic. In 1940 the directory lists B H Warden at 1323 East 62nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Bernard H Warden there as the householder, a principal clerk at the City of Vancouver.
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M Warden at 2144 East Pender Street. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Marian Warden there as the householder, a stenographer. The 1940 name section lists Helen Warden at 1175 Haro Street, a stenographer.
Mrs K Warden is listed at 3608 Napier Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Kathleen Warden there as the householder. M S Warden is listed at 321 Vernon Drive in 1940.
In 1940 the directory lists D M Warden at 3903 West 20th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists David M Warden there as the householder, retired, with Vida M Warden, a student at UBC. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs V W Warden at 4370 West 9th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Virginia W Warden there as the householder, widow of R H, with Betty Warden, a clerk at Woodward's.
Today
1921 Collingwood, 1323 East 62nd, 3903 West 20th and 4370 West 9th still have their buildings from before 1946; 1133 Beach (1973), 1175 Haro (1967) and 3608 Napier (1991) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2144 East Pender and 321 Vernon Drive, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
