The Wallses

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at seven addresses

The directories print twelve people named Walls at seven addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Wallses at 3041 West 14th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the twelve: a salesman (3), a meter reader (2), a clerk, a domestic, an engineer and a shipper, among others. Two of them worked for BC Electric Railway. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (3), Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Renfrew-Collingwood and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists B Walls at 2770 Charles Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Bertram Walls there as the householder, retired, with Bertram R Walls, a salesman for M Dumond, and Gweneth V Walls, a domestic. In 1940 the directory lists H Walls at 788 East 21st Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Harry Walls there as the householder, a salesman at Robertson's Bakeries.

In 1940 the directory lists V A Walls at 2666 East 22nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists V Arnold Walls there as the householder, an engineer at American Can. In 1940 the directory lists D M Walls at 4041 West 13th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists David M Walls there as the householder, retired, with Doug G Walls, a meter reader at the BC Electric Railway.

The 1940 name section lists Charles Walls at 3020 West 14th Avenue, a clerk. Mrs J Walls is listed at 3041 West 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Jane Walls there as the householder, widow of P, with Arthur Walls, a salesman, Ernest Walls, a shipper for Orange Crush, and Helen Walls, a stenographer at the Province. The 1940 name section lists Don R Walls at 3232 West 15th Avenue as the householder, a meter reader at the BC Electric Railway.

Today

788 East 21st, 3020 West 14th and 3041 West 14th still have their buildings from before 1946, 788 East 21st on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2770 Charles (1971), 4041 West 13th (2012) and 3232 West 15th (2020) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2666 East 22nd, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
