The Wallaces

In the city directories 1940 · ten people at five addresses

The directories print ten people named Wallace at five addresses in 1940, all on West 12th Avenue. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Wallaces at 1816 West 12th in 1940. The directories print the name on 88 other streets too, all listed on the Wallace name's own page.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the ten: a clerk, a draftsman, an on active service, a roadman, a school teacher and a stenographer, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West Point Grey (3), Fairview and Kitsilano. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Jean M Wallace at 914 West 12th Avenue, a waitress for Aristocratic Hamburgers. Mrs F E Wallace is listed at 1816 West 12th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Freda E Wallace there as the householder, widow of W A, with Frederick L Wallace, a draftsman at the Burrard Dry Dock, and M Kathleen Wallace, a school teacher.

Mrs A W Wallace is listed at 3921 West 12th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Agnes W Wallace there as the householder, widow of R, with Margaret C Wallace, a stenographer at H R MacMillan Export, and Syd J Wallace, a roadman at American Can. W T Wallace is listed at 4504 West 12th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William T Wallace there as the householder, a clerk at the BC Electric Railway.

D R Wallace is listed at 4611 West 12th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Daniel R Wallace there as the householder, on active service, with Jessie Wallace, a student.

Today

1816 West 12th and 4611 West 12th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1816 West 12th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 3921 West 12th (1992) and 4504 West 12th (2013) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 914 West 12th, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
