A family name in Vancouver's city directories

The Wakelys

In the city directories 1940 · ten people at seven addresses

The directories print ten people named Wakely at seven addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Wakelys at 2315 Clark Drive in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the ten: a canvasser, a clerk, a hairdresser, an insurance, a salesman and a saleswoman. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West Point Grey (2), Downtown, Grandview-Woodland, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs S R Wakely at 2315 Clark Drive. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Susanna R Wakely there as the householder, widow of W B, with Stella R Wakely, a saleswoman, and Wilfred G Wakely, a clerk at Burns & Co. In 1940 the directory lists C V Wakely at 7012 Cypress Street. The 1940 name section lists Charles V Wakely there as the householder, in insurance.

The 1940 name section lists Walter Wakely at 1847 Pendrell Street, a hairdresser at Vancouver Hotel Beauty Salon. C V Wakely, in insurance, is listed at 525 Seymour Street in 1940. In 1940 the directory lists E N Wakely, in sheet metal works, at 4436 West 10th Avenue.

Mrs A Wakely is listed at 4178 West 12th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Annie Wakely there as the householder, widow of J L, with James T Wakely, a salesman at the Enterprise Foundry. W C Wakely is listed at 2191 West 1st Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists W Cecil Wakely there as the householder, a canvasser for Ceperley Rounsefell.

Today

7012 Cypress, 525 Seymour and 2191 West 1st still have their buildings from before 1946, 525 Seymour on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1847 Pendrell (1957) and 4178 West 12th (1946) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2315 Clark Drive and 4436 West 10th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
