The directories print eleven people named Vosper at seven addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Vospers at 4288 West 10th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the eleven: an attendant, a clerk, a driver, a general agent, a manager and a proprietor, among others. Two of them worked for Railway Express Agency. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (2), Kitsilano (2), Hastings-Sunrise, Kerrisdale and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists H W Vosper at 2629 East 7th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Harold W Vosper there as the householder, a driver at the Railway Express Agency. The 1940 name section lists William E Vosper at 1316 Walnut Street, an attendant at Shell Oil.

Miss M Vosper is listed at 1596 West 10th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Maude Vosper there as the householder, proprietor of Mary Ellen Dress Shop. R B Vosper is listed at 4288 West 10th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Richard B Vosper there as the householder, retired, with E Ruth Vosper, a stenographer, and Helen G Vosper, a manager at Jean Burns Ladies Wear.

N K Vosper is listed at 2566 West 2nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Newton K Vosper there as the householder, a general agent at the Railway Express Agency, with V La Velle Vosper, a clerk at Rogers Ltd. The 1940 name section lists Emily Vosper at 2331 West 45th Avenue, widow of F.

In 1940 the directory lists E A Vosper at 1663 West 7th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Edwin A Vosper there as the householder.

Today

1596 West 10th, 4288 West 10th, 2566 West 2nd and 2331 West 45th still have their buildings from before 1946; 2629 East 7th (2005) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1316 Walnut and 1663 West 7th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under V. Want a name removed? Tell us.
