What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the ten: a clerk (2), an agent, an inspector, an instructor, a janitor and a proprietor.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), West End (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Marpole, Sunset and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Audrey F Underwood at 1406 Davie Street, a clerk at Spencer's. R Underwood is listed at 1870 East 34th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Robert Underwood there as the householder, a janitor at the Canadian Government.

R Underwood is listed at 2065 East 46th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Richard Underwood there as the householder, a clerk at the Post Office. H M Underwood is listed at 319 East 47th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Herbert M Underwood there as the householder, an inspector at Federal Meat Inspection Division and a president at Trianon Roller Rink Ltd.

J A Underwood is listed at 1915 Haro Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John A Underwood there as the householder, an instructor at Hemphill Diesel Engineering Schools. Elliott Fisher Underwood, in typewriters, is listed at 648 Seymour Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Typewriters Underwood there.

The 1940 name section lists Alice Underwood at 2357 West 4th Avenue, proprietor of the Clifton Lending Library. In 1940 the directory lists S C Underwood at 1042 West 59th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Syd C Underwood there as the householder, an agent at Prudential Insurance. In 1940 the directory lists P C Underwood, an architect, at 850 West Hastings Street.

Today

319 East 47th, 1915 Haro and 850 West Hastings still have their buildings from before 1946, 319 East 47th and 850 West Hastings on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2065 East 46th (1983) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1406 Davie, 1870 East 34th, 648 Seymour, 2357 West 4th and 1042 West 59th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under U. Want a name removed? Tell us.
