The Tripps
In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at eight addresses
The directories print eleven people named Tripp at eight addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Trip. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Tripps at 825 West 8th in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for six of the eleven: a bookkeeper, an employee, a laborer, a manager, a nurse and a salesman.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown (2), West End (2), Fairview, Kitsilano, South Cambie and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mrs Anne E Tripp at 1140 Alberni Street. The 1940 name section lists Stan G Tripp at 1663 Barclay Street, a manager at Goodrich Silvertown Stores. In 1940 the directory lists C H Trip, rooms to let, at 539 Burrard Street. The 1940 name section lists Borge Trip there, a salesman for W R Cumming.
The 1940 name section lists Walter G Tripp at 264 Union Street, a laborer. F W Tripp is listed at 872 West 18th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Frederick W Tripp there as the householder, who worked for the Vancouver General Hospital.
F G Tripp is listed at 825 West 8th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Frederick G Tripp there as the householder, a bookkeeper for W Scott, with Herbert H Tripp, a student, and Louisa E Tripp, a nurse for Dr M Fox. W E Tripp is listed at 3126 West 8th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William E Tripp there as the householder.
J D A Tripp, a music teacher, is listed at 603 West Hastings Street in 1940.
Today
872 West 18th and 3126 West 8th still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 1140 Alberni, 1663 Barclay, 539 Burrard, 264 Union, 825 West 8th and 603 West Hastings, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under T. Want a name removed? Tell us.
