What they did
The name section prints a trade for six of the nine: a caretaker, a chauffeur, an engineer, a grader, a salesman and a telegraph operator. Two of them worked for Canadian Government. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Arbutus Ridge, Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Mount Pleasant, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Andrew J Trimble at 700 Cambie Street. J Trimble is listed at 2972 Charles Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John Trimble there as the householder, a telegraph operator.
E Trimble is listed at 270 East 10th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Edward Trimble there as the householder, an engineer at the Canadian Government. The 1940 name section lists George J Trimble at 884 East 19th Avenue.
In 1940 the directory lists H J Trimble at 456 East 48th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Herbert J Trimble there as the householder, a salesman at Burnett & Matheson. In 1940 the directory lists G A Trimble at 1901 Pendrell Street. The 1940 name section lists George A Trimble there as the householder, a caretaker at Gilford Court.
In 1940 the directory lists R C Trimble at 2796 West 21st Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Roy C Trimble there as the householder, a grader at the Canadian Government. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M M Trimble at 3577 West 42nd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists M Maud Trimble there as the householder, widow of D.
In 1940 the directory lists F H Trimble at 910 West 8th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Frederick H Trimble there as the householder, a chauffeur for Star Cabs.
Today
2796 West 21st still has its building from before 1946, dated 1940 by the City's record; 456 East 48th (1980), 3577 West 42nd (1979) and 910 West 8th (1986) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 700 Cambie, 2972 Charles, 270 East 10th, 884 East 19th and 1901 Pendrell, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under T. Want a name removed? Tell us.
