A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Trainors
In the city directories 1940 · ten people at eight addresses
The directories print ten people named Trainor at eight addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Trainors at 3342 East 27th in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for six of the ten: a clerk (2), a locker steward, an on active service, a photographer and a warehouseman.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Fairview (3), Renfrew-Collingwood (2), Downtown, Kitsilano and Shaughnessy. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists J Trainor at 3342 East 27th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John Trainor there as the householder, with Frank L Trainor, a clerk for Gardiner Wardrop, and Gerald M Trainor. The 1940 name section lists Leo C Trainor at 2535 Hemlock Street, a clerk at the BC Government. The 1940 name section lists Mary A Trainor at 1280 Richards Street.
In 1940 the directory lists C Trainor at 4896 Rupert Street. The 1940 name section lists Charles Trainor there as the householder, a warehouseman at BC Plywoods. In 1940 the directory lists G Trainor at 825 West 13th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists George Trainor there as the householder, on active service.
The 1940 name section lists Reginald Trainor at 1308 West 33rd Avenue, a locker steward at the Shaughnessy Heights Golf Club. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Nora A Trainor at 2536 West 6th Avenue, a photographer at Dominion Photo. In 1940 the directory lists J Trainor at 690 West 7th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John Trainor there as the householder, retired.
Today
3342 East 27th and 2536 West 6th still have their buildings from before 1946, 2536 West 6th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1280 Richards (2003) and 4896 Rupert (2002) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2535 Hemlock, 825 West 13th, 1308 West 33rd and 690 West 7th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under T. Want a name removed? Tell us.
