What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the eleven: a chief engineer, a director, a mechanic, a salesman, a saleswoman and a shipper, among others.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), Kitsilano (2), West End (2), Marpole, Riley Park and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Herbert H Trail at 1686 Barclay Street. G Traill is listed at 507 East 16th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists George Traill there as the householder, a laborer, with George Traill Jr, a shipper at Brown Bros Bakeries.
D Traill is listed at 2455 East 5th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists David Traill there as the householder, a salesman. D O Trail is listed at 2796 Grant Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists David O Trail there as the householder, retired.
Mrs E McK Traill, rooms to let, is listed at 1123 Robson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Elizabeth McK Traill there, with Robert Traill, a chief engineer at C W Lumber. Mrs L Trail is listed at 2326 West 1st Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Lillian Trail there as the householder.
The 1940 name section lists Margaret Trail at 2237 West 3rd Avenue, a saleswoman at Woolworths. In 1940 the directory lists P Traill at 4552 West 3rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Peter Traill there as the householder, a director at H Bell-Irving.
In 1940 the directory lists A Trail at 1574 West 63rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Alex Trail there as the householder, a mechanic at Canadian Liquid Air, with Dorothy B Trail, a writer.
Today
2455 East 5th (1997), 2796 Grant (1988) and 4552 West 3rd (2002) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1686 Barclay, 507 East 16th, 1123 Robson, 2326 West 1st, 2237 West 3rd and 1574 West 63rd, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

The book of the Traills
Every directory, as one book

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under T. Want a name removed? Tell us.
