The Traceys

In the city directories 1940 · 13 people at ten addresses

The directories print 13 people named Tracey at ten addresses in 1940 in eight of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Tracy. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Traceys at 3715 West 30th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the 13: a stenographer (2), a bridge operator, a fireman, a helper, a jewellery repairer and a longshoreman. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise, Mount Pleasant, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists M Tracey at 1312 East 27th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Malcolm Tracey there as the householder, a longshoreman. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E C Tracey at 628 East 8th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Emma C Tracey there as the householder, widow of W R.

The 1940 name section lists A Tracey at 871 Granville Street. The 1940 name section lists J S Tracey at 1125 Granville Street. In 1940 the directory lists P Tracey at 2721 Graveley Street. The 1940 name section lists Phillip Tracey there as the householder, a helper at the BC Electric Railway.

The 1940 name section lists L W Tracy at 969 Jervis Street. W F Tracey is listed at 4393 Knight Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William F Tracey there as the householder, a fireman at the City of Vancouver.

C F Tracey is listed at 1248 West 10th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles F Tracey there as the householder, a bridge operator at the National Harbours Board, with Percival A Tracey, a student. Mrs M Tracey is listed at 3715 West 30th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Mary Tracey there as the householder, with Cecilia Tracey, a stenographer, M Beatrice Tracey, a stenographer at the BC Government, and Melvina Tracey, a stenographer at the Workmen's Compensation Board.

A C Tracy is listed at 4411 West 4th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Arnold C Tracy there as the householder, a jewellery repairer at Tod & Manning.

Today

1125 Granville, 4393 Knight, 3715 West 30th and 4411 West 4th still have their buildings from before 1946; 1312 East 27th (1966), 628 East 8th (1965), 2721 Graveley (1992) and 969 Jervis (1980) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 871 Granville and 1248 West 10th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under T. Want a name removed? Tell us.
