What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the eight: a curer, a feeder, a laborer, a shipper and a sizer. Two of them worked for Canadian White Pine.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Victoria-Fraserview (2), Arbutus Ridge, Fairview and Kitsilano. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists W Torry at 1121 East 33rd Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Walter Torry there as the householder, a feeder at Canadian White Pine. In 1940 the directory lists F G Torry at 2226 East 44th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Frederick G Torry there as the householder, a sizer at Canadian White Pine.

In 1940 the directory lists W W Torry at 2352 East 54th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Walter W Torry there as the householder, a laborer. In 1940 the directory lists W A Torry at 4089 Victoria Drive; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William A Torry there as the householder, a curer at Fletcher's.

The 1940 name section lists Joan Torry at 733 West 13th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Joan C Torry at 2386 West 15th Avenue. In 1940 the directory lists J L Torry at 2575 West 37th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists James L Torry there as the householder, a shipper, with James L Torry Jr and Frederick G Torry.

Today

2575 West 37th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1920 by the City's record; 1121 East 33rd (1981), 2226 East 44th (2005), 2352 East 54th (1976), 4089 Victoria Drive (1992) and 2386 West 15th (2015) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 733 West 13th, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under T. Want a name removed? Tell us.
