What they did
The name section prints a trade for nine of the 13: a caretaker, a helper, a laborer, a meat cutter, a mechanic and an on active service, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), West End (2), Downtown, Killarney, Mount Pleasant, Renfrew-Collingwood and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Lola Thurston at 2279 Cambridge Street, a saleswoman at the Hudson's Bay Company. Mrs H A Thurston is listed at 2626 Duke Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Helen A Thurston there as the householder, widow of T, with Cleo V Thurston, Ethel G Thurston, Thomas H Thurston, a helper for H M Nugent, and William H Thurston, a salesman. The 1940 name section lists John Thurston at 3412 East 54th Avenue, a mechanic at Consolidated Motor.
In 1940 the directory lists J A Thurston at 156 East 8th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists John A Thurston there as the householder, a caretaker at Crosbie Block. In 1940 the directory lists G Thurston at 2285 East Pender Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George Thurston there as the householder, a laborer at the Alberta Wheat Pool.
The 1940 name section lists T Ken Thurston at 1154 Gilford Street. The 1940 name section lists Walter Thurston at 843 Hamilton Street, a painter. The 1940 name section lists Sam S Thurston at 2047 Pendrell Street, on active service.
F Thurston is listed at 4263 Quebec Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Fred Thurston there as the householder, a meat cutter.
Today
156 East 8th, 2285 East Pender and 1154 Gilford still have their buildings from before 1946, 156 East 8th and 1154 Gilford on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 4263 Quebec (2018) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2279 Cambridge, 2626 Duke, 3412 East 54th, 843 Hamilton and 2047 Pendrell, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under T. Want a name removed? Tell us.
