What they did
The name section prints a trade for four of the nine: an examiner, a priest, a salesman and a warehouseman. Two are widows, listed under their own names.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), West End (2), Grandview-Woodland, Kerrisdale and Kitsilano. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists W J Thyer at 2602 Franklin Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists E Muriel Thyer there. In 1940 the directory lists J A Thyer at 1085 Lillooet Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James A Thyer there as the householder, an examiner at the Customs, with William Thyer, a warehouseman at Columbia Paper.
In 1940 the directory lists F H Thayer at 6138 Marguerite Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick H Thayer there as the householder, a salesman at the B-K Mill. The 1940 name section lists Serena A Thayer at 1740 Nelson Street, a widow. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Mary E Thayer at 1183 Pacific Street.
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs N B Thayer at 304 Victoria Drive; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Nina B Thayer there as the householder, widow of F. The 1940 name section lists Father Henry Thayer at 2015 West 8th Avenue, a priest at the St Augustine's (R C) Church.
Today
1085 Lillooet, 6138 Marguerite and 2015 West 8th still have their buildings from before 1946, 2015 West 8th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; the City no longer lists 2602 Franklin, 1740 Nelson, 1183 Pacific and 304 Victoria Drive, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under T. Want a name removed? Tell us.
