The Takahashis

In the city directories 1940 · 14 people at nine addresses

The directories print 14 people named Takahashi at nine addresses in 1940 in four of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Takahashis at 306 Alexander in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 14: a gardener (3), a laborer (2), a millworker, a proprietor, a rice mill and a typist. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Strathcona (4), Mount Pleasant (3), Fairview and Grandview-Woodland. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs K Takahashi at 306 Alexander Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Kuno Takahashi there as the householder, widow of K, with George Takahashi, a laborer, Haruko Takahashi, and Yoshio Takahashi, a laborer. In 1940 the directory lists K Takahashi, a rice mill, at 620 Alexander Street. The 1940 name section lists Kiriko Takahashi there, with Koichi Takahashi, a rice mill.

In 1940 the directory lists Y Takahashi at 231 East 2nd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Yoshinaga Takahashi there as the householder, a gardener. The 1940 name section lists Seihei Takahashi at 241 East Hastings Street, proprietor of the Belmont Rooms.

T Takahashi is listed at 2215 McGill Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Tsuruichi Takahashi there as the householder. K Takahashi is listed at 1621 West 3rd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Kuhichi Takahashi there as the householder, a millworker.

Y Takahashi is listed at 116 West 4th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Yoshie Takahashi there as the householder, widow of W. C Takahashi is listed at 238 West 5th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Chozo Takahashi there as the householder, a gardener, with Hideo Takahashi, a typist for Japanese Consulate.

Y Takahashi is listed at 414 West 6th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Yoshemi Takahashi there as the householder, a gardener.

Today

241 East Hastings still has its building from before 1946, dated 1910 by the City's record; 2215 McGill (1988) and 238 West 5th (1983) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 306 Alexander, 620 Alexander, 231 East 2nd, 1621 West 3rd, 116 West 4th and 414 West 6th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under T. Want a name removed? Tell us.
