What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 14: a deckhand, a logger, a machinist, a millwright, a plasterer and a saleswoman, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Mount Pleasant (3), Strathcona (2), West End (2), Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise, Renfrew-Collingwood and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs G Taggart at 1045 Beach Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Gertrude Taggart there as the householder, widow of R J. In 1940 the directory lists A Taggart at 2925 East 29th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Andrew Taggart there, a plasterer.

In 1940 the directory lists N F Taggart at 3115 East 4th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Nathaniel F Taggart there as the householder, a taxi. In 1940 the directory lists Miss E Taggart at 343 East 8th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Evelyn Taggart there as the householder, a stenographer at R A Wyllie & Son, with Ida Taggart.

In 1940 the directory lists N F Taggart, a taxi, at 750 East Hastings Street. T A Taggart is listed at 219 East King Edward Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Thomas A Taggart there as the householder, retired, with Gerald A Taggart, a deckhand. The 1940 name section lists Charles H Taggart at 2700 Main Street, a millwright.

In 1940 the directory lists W S Taggart at 2735 Prince Edward Street. The 1940 name section lists Willard S Taggart there as the householder, a machinist at Boyles Bros. The 1940 name section lists Albert W Taggart at 536 Prior Street, a logger. The 1940 name section lists Taggart (no first name printed) at 1041 Robson Street.

The 1940 name section lists Mary Taggart at 1555 West 13th Avenue, a saleswoman at the Hudson's Bay Company.

Today

219 East King Edward still has its building from before 1946, dated 1910 by the City's record; 2925 East 29th (2005), 3115 East 4th (2004), 343 East 8th (1969), 536 Prior (1992) and 1555 West 13th (1956) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1045 Beach, 750 East Hastings, 2700 Main, 2735 Prince Edward and 1041 Robson, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under T. Want a name removed? Tell us.
