What they did
The name section prints a trade for five of the nine: a clerk (2), a housekeeper, a laborer and a mining engineer. Two of them worked for Bank of Montreal. Two are widows, listed under their own names.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Fairview (3), West End (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Killarney and Kitsilano. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists J E Stilwell at 1236 Bidwell Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John E Stilwell there as the householder, retired. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E M Stilwell at 2935 East 54th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Emily M Stilwell there as the householder, widow of G, with Joseph E Stilwell, a laborer at Canadian White Pine.
The 1940 name section lists Mary J Stillwell at 1101 Gilford Street, widow of W R. B E Stilwell is listed at 1766 West 10th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Bernard E Stilwell there as the householder, a clerk at the Bank of Montreal. The 1940 name section lists Gerald Stilwell at 1315 West 13th Avenue, a mining engineer.
The 1940 name section lists Mrs Mary Stillwell at 1535 West 14th Avenue, a housekeeper for Mrs A Kahn. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Christina McF Stilwell at 2897 West 15th Avenue. In 1940 the directory lists E G Stilwell at 3741 West 36th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Egerton G Stilwell there as the householder, a clerk at the Bank of Montreal.
Today
1535 West 14th, 2897 West 15th and 3741 West 36th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1535 West 14th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1236 Bidwell (1976) and 2935 East 54th (1983) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1101 Gilford, 1766 West 10th and 1315 West 13th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

The book of the Stilwells
Every directory, as one book

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
