The Sterlings

In the city directories 1940 · 13 people at nine addresses

The directories print 13 people named Sterling at nine addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Sterlings at 1209 Jervis in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 13: a driver, a general agent, a manufacturers agent, an operator, a police officer and a salesman, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (3), Downtown (2), Killarney, Mount Pleasant, Riley Park and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists H C Sterling at 777 Burrard Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Herbert C Sterling there as the householder, a police officer at the City of Vancouver. The 1940 name section lists George Sterling at 244 East 11th Avenue.

T H G Sterling is listed at 169 East 24th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Thomas H G Sterling there as the householder, a salesman at Western Leckie, with John Sterling, a storeman at the BC Electric Railway. J S Sterling is listed at 1003 East 64th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists James S Sterling there as the householder, a general agent at Loyal Protective Life Insurance.

F W Sterling, a manufacturers agent, is listed at 1060 Hamilton Street in 1940. In 1940 the directory lists F W Sterling at 1915 Haro Street. The 1940 name section lists Frederick W Sterling there as the householder, a manufacturers agent.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A M Sterling at 1209 Jervis Street. The 1940 name section lists Anna M Sterling there as the householder, widow of C, with Bernice A Sterling, a stenographer, Finlay Sterling, a driver, and Hilda P Sterling, an operator at the BC Telephone. In 1940 the directory lists W G Sterling at 6751 Kerr Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William G Sterling there as the householder, retired.

The 1940 name section lists Sales Sterling at 136 Water Street.

Today

777 Burrard, 1915 Haro and 1209 Jervis still have their buildings from before 1946, 1209 Jervis on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 169 East 24th (2001) and 6751 Kerr (1963) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 244 East 11th, 1003 East 64th, 1060 Hamilton and 136 Water, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
