The Springers

In the city directories 1940 · 13 people at ten addresses

The directories print 13 people named Springer at ten addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Springers at 2653 Adanac in 1940.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (3), Downtown (2), Renfrew-Collingwood (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Hastings-Sunrise and Kitsilano. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists H Springer at 2653 Adanac Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Henry Springer there as the householder, a trackman at the BC Electric Railway, with Mrs Albetje Springer, a pastor at the Sunshine Apostolic Mission, and John Springer, a longshoreman. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Alice Springer at 1375 Burrard Street, a waitress at Union Pier Sandwich Shop.

Mrs C A Springer is listed at 1041 Comox Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Charlo A Springer there as the householder, proprietor of Bon Ton Cafe, with R E Springer, a millworker at BC Plywoods. The 1940 name section lists Jill Springer at 1061 Comox Street, a saleswoman at Woodward's.

In 1940 the directory lists E Springer at 3279 East 20th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Eric Springer there as the householder, an embosser at Gehrkes. In 1940 the directory lists H W Springer at 3230 East 22nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Henry W Springer there as the householder, a mechanic.

The 1940 name section lists Mrs M Springer at 914 Robson Street, a manager at the Robson Messenger Service. The 1940 name section lists Springer (no first name printed) at 3127 West 26th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Dorothy M Springer at 2386 West 3rd Avenue, a salesman at Spencer's. The 1940 name section lists Eva Springer at 1040 West Georgia Street, a bookkeeper for A J Jensen.

Today

2653 Adanac, 1041 Comox, 3279 East 20th and 2386 West 3rd still have their buildings from before 1946, 1041 Comox on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 3230 East 22nd (1969), 3127 West 26th (2011) and 1040 West Georgia (1985) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1375 Burrard, 1061 Comox and 914 Robson, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
