What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the twelve: a logger (2), a carpenter, a clerk, a manager, a proprietor and a secretary-treasurer, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Kitsilano, Marpole, Strathcona, Victoria-Fraserview and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists A Sorenson at 3831 Dunbar Street. P Sorenson is listed at 6940 Gladstone Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Paul Sorenson there as the householder, a carpenter. The 1940 name section lists Walter Sorenson at 8079 Hudson Street.

In 1940 the directory lists E C K Sorenson at 2355 Kitchener Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Einar C K Sorenson there as the householder, a logger, with Fred Sorenson, a clerk. In 1940 the directory lists S Sorenson at 2043 Macdonald Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Sverre Sorenson there as the householder.

The 1940 name section lists Mrs Sophie Sorenson at 318 Main Street, proprietor of Green Orchard Lunch. N Sorenson is listed at 3551 Oxford Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Neils Sorenson there as the householder, a warehouseman at Mainland Ice.

C Sorenson is listed at 955 Thurlow Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Chris Sorenson there as the householder, a manager at The Biltmore. Mrs L M Sorenson is listed at 1270 West 11th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Ernest Sorenson at 1455 West 11th Avenue, a secretary-treasurer at Trader's Service.

The 1940 name section lists Carl Sorenson at 50 West Cordova Street, a logger.

Today

3831 Dunbar, 2043 Macdonald, 955 Thurlow, 1270 West 11th, 1455 West 11th and 50 West Cordova still have their buildings from before 1946; 6940 Gladstone (1977), 8079 Hudson (1987), 2355 Kitchener (1981) and 3551 Oxford (1980) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 318 Main, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
