What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the eleven: a barrister, a cashier, a maid, an operator and a proprietor. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Renfrew-Collingwood (2), West End (2), Arbutus Ridge, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists R H Smillie at 2565 Alma Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Robert H Smillie there as the householder, proprietor of White Dove Dry Cleaners & Dyers. In 1940 the directory lists A T G Smillie, a service station, at 655 Burrard Street. The 1940 name section lists Smillie at 1641 Davie Street, a widow.

In 1940 the directory lists T H Smillie at 2724 East 26th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Thomas H Smillie there as the householder, an operator at Canadian Industries Limited, with Isabel Smillie, a student. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A Smillie at 3404 East 26th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Alice Smillie there as the householder.

The 1940 name section lists Henry Smilie at 1000 Gilford Street, a barrister. A W Smillie is listed at 2396 West 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists A Watson Smillie there as the householder, a cashier at National Biscuit.

A T G Smillie is listed at 2658 West 34th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Andrew T G Smillie there as the householder, in gas, oil and parking. The 1940 name section lists Annie Smillie at 1525 West 49th Avenue, a maid for F McGregor. In 1940 the directory lists H Smilie, a barrister, at 675 West Hastings Street.

Today

3404 East 26th, 2396 West 14th, 2658 West 34th, 1525 West 49th and 675 West Hastings still have their buildings from before 1946; 655 Burrard (1970) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2565 Alma, 1641 Davie, 2724 East 26th and 1000 Gilford, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
