The Slavins

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at six addresses

The directories print eleven people named Slavin at six addresses in 1940 in four of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: five Slavins at 2555 East Georgia in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the eleven: a fireman, a fisherman, a greaser, a laborer, a laundryman and a manager, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), Hastings-Sunrise (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage and Kitsilano. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists M J Slavin at 5595 Chester Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Michael J Slavin there as the householder, a laundryman. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs B Slavin at 2555 East Georgia Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Beatrice Slavin there as the householder, widow of J, with Frank Slavin, a fisherman, Jane B Slavin, a stenographer at the City of Vancouver, Maurice S Slavin, a laborer, and Patrick Slavin, an optician.

In 1940 the directory lists J Slavin at 2080 East Pender Street. The 1940 name section lists James Slavin there as the householder, a greaser at the BC Electric Railway. In 1940 the directory lists J V Slavin at 2130 East Pender Street. The 1940 name section lists James V Slavin there as the householder, a fireman at the Hudson's Bay Company.

In 1940 the directory lists J T Slavin at 2502 Wall Street. The 1940 name section lists J Thomas Slavin there as the householder, a seaman at the Union Steamship Company. In 1940 the directory lists J E Slavin at 3642 West Broadway; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John E Slavin there as the householder, a manager at Slavin's Funeral Service, with Mrs Margaret A Slavin.

Today

5595 Chester, 2080 East Pender and 2502 Wall still have their buildings from before 1946; 2555 East Georgia (1961) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2130 East Pender and 3642 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
