What they did
The name section prints a trade for nine of the 17: a laborer (2), a secretary hand goods (2), a carpenter, a domestic, a messenger and a proprietor, among others.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Mount Pleasant (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Oakridge, Strathcona and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Abraham Sisson at 58 East 6th Avenue, proprietor of Sisson's Credit Jewellers, with Escher Sisson, Mrs Helen Sisson, in secretary hand goods, and Sam Sisson, in secretary hand goods. W Sisson is listed at 124 East 8th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William Sisson there as the householder, a carpenter, with Dorothy E Sisson, E Ellen Sisson, Margaret E Sisson, and Melvin R Sisson, a messenger.
H H Sisson is listed at 5086 Inverness Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Howard H Sisson there as the householder, a laborer, with James H Sisson, and Madaline J Sisson, a domestic. S Sisson, in secretary hand goods, is listed at 611 Main Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Harry L Sisson at 6130 Victoria Drive, a laborer.
D Sisson is listed at 2997 West 35th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists David Sisson there as the householder, a salesman for Mrs H Sisson. Mrs S C Sisson is listed at 332 West 52nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). In 1940 the directory lists Mrs H Sisson, in secretary hand goods, at 76 West Cordova Street.
Today
5086 Inverness (2001), 6130 Victoria Drive (1987) and 2997 West 35th (2007) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 58 East 6th, 124 East 8th, 611 Main, 332 West 52nd and 76 West Cordova, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
