The Simmondses

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at ten addresses

The directories print twelve people named Simmonds at ten addresses in 1940 in eight of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Simonds. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Simmondses at 1036 East 14th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the twelve: an architect, a cook, a meat cutter, an operator and a salesman. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (3), Downtown, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Mount Pleasant, Shaughnessy and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs H Simmonds, rooms to let, at 1129 Barclay Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mrs Helen Simmonds there, who kept rooms to let. In 1940 the directory lists H H Simmonds, an architect, at 340 Burrard Street.

P J Simmonds is listed at 1036 East 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Percy J Simmonds there as the householder, a cook at the Shaughnessy Hospital Canadian Government, with Jack A Simmonds, and Winnifred M Simmonds, an operator at the BC Telephone. F Simmonds is listed at 1324 East 18th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Frank Simmonds there as the householder, retired.

F S Simonds is listed at 2182 East 46th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick S Simonds there as the householder, a meat cutter. Mrs M E Simmonds is listed at 1877 Pendrell Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Janet Simmonds at 1988 Pendrell Street.

The 1940 name section lists Richard Simmonds at 1305 West 14th Avenue, a salesman at Canada Packers. In 1940 the directory lists H H Simmonds at 2080 West 35th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Henry H Simmonds there as the householder, an architect. The 1940 name section lists Emma J Simmonds at 1041 Woodland Drive, widow of W H.

Today

1324 East 18th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1907 by the City's record; 2182 East 46th (1961) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1129 Barclay, 340 Burrard, 1036 East 14th, 1877 Pendrell, 1988 Pendrell, 1305 West 14th, 2080 West 35th and 1041 Woodland Drive, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
