What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the twelve: a maid (2), a proprietor (2), a canvasser, a carpenter, a glazier and a nurse, among others. Two of them worked for Sigurdson Millwork.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (3), Downtown (2), West End (2), Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise, Marpole and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Eyolfur Sigurdson at 3383 East 2nd Avenue as the householder, proprietor of Ontario Barber Shop. The 1940 name section lists Ruth Sigurdson at 2080 Haro Street, proprietor of Mdme Louise. The 1940 name section lists John Sigurdson at 7362 Main Street, a carpenter.

O Sigurdson is listed at 7914 Montcalm Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Ornie Sigurdson there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists O Sigurdson at 123 Powell Street. The 1940 name section lists Edward Sigurdson at 440 Richards Street, a canvasser at the Province.

The 1940 name section lists Lily Sigurdson at 2570 Spruce Street, a nurse. The 1940 name section lists Margaret Sigurdson at 1865 West 13th Avenue, a maid for Dr W D Patton. The 1940 name section lists Halldora K Sigurdson at 3181 West 2nd Avenue, a teacher at the Deaf & Blind School.

In 1940 the directory lists J F Sigurdson at 3241 West 2nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John F Sigurdson there as the householder, a president for Sigurdson Millwork, with John K Sigurdson, a glazier for Sigurdson Millwork. The 1940 name section lists Olof Sigurdson at 1040 West Georgia Street, a maid for Mrs A J Ross.

Today

440 Richards and 2570 Spruce still have their buildings from before 1946; 3383 East 2nd (1989), 1865 West 13th (2010), 3181 West 2nd (2005), 3241 West 2nd (1987) and 1040 West Georgia (1985) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2080 Haro, 7362 Main, 7914 Montcalm and 123 Powell, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
