Where the Sherlocks lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the nine: a druggist, an employee, a laborer, a painter, a president and a salesman. Three are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Marpole, Shaughnessy, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists G W Sherlock at 2424 Cornwall Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Gerald W Sherlock there as the householder, a druggist at Owl Drug. The 1940 name section lists Cath Sherlock at 1771 East 2nd Avenue, widow of J.

Mrs J L Sherlock is listed at 742 East 56th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Jenny L Sherlock there as the householder, widow of U T. The 1940 name section lists Margaret L Sheirlock at 1202 Harwood Street, widow of J.

In 1940 the directory lists E Sherlock at 3742 Inverness Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Eldon V Sherlock there, with Ethelbert Sherlock, a painter. The 1940 name section lists Clarence J Sherlock at 2509 Pandora Street, a laborer. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Ethel Sherlock at 8155 Shaughnessy Street, who worked for Canada Packers.

In 1940 the directory lists W E Sherlock at 1149 West 29th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Wallace E Sherlock there as the householder, a president at Bus Investment. In 1940 the directory lists O J Sherlock at 3061 West 5th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Oscar J Sherlock there as the householder, a salesman at Canadian Bakeries.

Today

1771 East 2nd, 742 East 56th, 3742 Inverness, 2509 Pandora, 1149 West 29th and 3061 West 5th still have their buildings from before 1946; 1202 Harwood (1968) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2424 Cornwall and 8155 Shaughnessy, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
