A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Shankses
In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at nine addresses
The directories print eleven people named Shanks at nine addresses in 1940 in nine of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Shankses at 1158 Park Drive in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for five of the eleven: a driver, a machinist operator, a proprietor, a salesman and a secretary. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Marpole, Shaughnessy, South Cambie, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs L Shanks at 555 East 54th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Louisa Shanks there as the householder, widow of F. In 1940 the directory lists W Shanks at 3768 Heather Street. The 1940 name section lists William Shanks there as the householder, a driver at M T Co.
In 1940 the directory lists J A Shanks at 4170 Inverness Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James A Shanks there as the householder, proprietor of the Arbutus & 16th Service. In 1940 the directory lists W Shanks at 1158 Park Drive; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William Shanks there as the householder, retired, with Helen E Shanks, and Ida I Shanks, a secretary at C N Institute.
In 1940 the directory lists N Shanks at 1054 Pendrell Street. The 1940 name section lists Nelson Shanks there as the householder. In 1940 the directory lists J G Shanks at 1376 West 26th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John G Shanks there as the householder, retired.
In 1940 the directory lists L J Shanks at 1461 West Georgia Street. The 1940 name section lists Leo J Shanks there as the householder, a machinist operator at the Province. In 1940 the directory lists H M Shanks at 2628 William Street. The 1940 name section lists Harry M Shanks there as the householder, a salesman.
The 1940 name section lists Mrs Marion Shanks at 1870 Yew Street.
Today
4170 Inverness and 2628 William still have their buildings from before 1946; 555 East 54th (1970), 3768 Heather (1988), 1376 West 26th (2016) and 1870 Yew (1982) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1158 Park Drive, 1054 Pendrell and 1461 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
