What they did

The name section prints a trade for eleven of the 13: a clerk (3), a car repairer, a janitor, a laborer, a salesman and a saleswoman, among others. Two of them worked for Spencer's.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Mount Pleasant, Strathcona and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Thomas Seeley at 429 Campbell Avenue, a car repairer at the BC Electric Railway. The 1940 name section lists Robert Seeley at 119 East Cordova Street. In 1940 the directory lists I D Seeley at 1611 East Pender Street. The 1940 name section lists Iver D Seeley there as the householder, a janitor.

The 1940 name section lists Marion Seeley at 1210 Harwood Street, a stenographer at Boeing's. C V Seeley is listed at 785 Kaslo Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Chester V Seeley there as the householder, a sweeper at the City of Vancouver.

L A Seeley is listed at 2442 Pandora Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Leslie A Seeley there as the householder, a laborer at the Mountain View Cemetery, with Dorothy Seeley, a student, Lyla M Seeley, a clerk at Spencer's, and Myrtle P Seeley, a clerk at Spencer's. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Hazel Seeley at 1131 West 16th Avenue, a clerk.

In 1940 the directory lists H C Seeley at 3965 West 32nd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Harry C Seeley there as the householder, a salesman, with Kathleen Seeley, a saleswoman at Woodward's. The 1940 name section lists Gertrude Seeley at 11 West Broadway, a waitress at Busy Bee Cafe.

Today

785 Kaslo, 1131 West 16th and 11 West Broadway still have their buildings from before 1946; 119 East Cordova (1987), 1611 East Pender (1988), 2442 Pandora (2016) and 3965 West 32nd (2004) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 429 Campbell and 1210 Harwood, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
