What they did
The name section prints a trade for six of the twelve: an accountant, an agent, a chief engineer, a clerk, an editor and a painter. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Kitsilano (4), Arbutus Ridge (2), Fairview (2), Downtown, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists W Schofield at 3671 Cameron Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William Schofield there as the householder, retired. In 1940 the directory lists H Schofield at 2340 Dunbar Street.
E Schofield is listed at 542 Helmcken Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Elgin Schofield there as the householder, a painter at Brooklyn Court. The 1940 name section lists F Schofield at 2075 Nelson Street as the householder, with Peter Schofield, an editor at Retailer. The 1940 name section lists John W Schofield at 3491 Trafalgar Street.
J Schofield is listed at 4227 West 14th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Jonathan Schofield there as the householder, an accountant at Commercial Chemicals. J H Schofield is listed at 1215 West 15th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists James H Schofield there as the householder, a clerk at the American News.
F H Schofield is listed at 2574 West 34th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Fred H Schofield there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists Nancy Schofield at 1969 West 3rd Avenue, widow of J.
In 1940 the directory lists S G Schofield at 638 West 8th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Stan G Schofield there as the householder, an agent for Empire Life. In 1940 the directory lists S Schofield at 3650 West 8th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Sam Schofield there as the householder, a chief engineer.
Today
2340 Dunbar and 3650 West 8th still have their buildings from before 1946; 3671 Cameron (1972) and 4227 West 14th (1990) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 542 Helmcken, 2075 Nelson, 3491 Trafalgar, 1215 West 15th, 2574 West 34th, 1969 West 3rd and 638 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

The book of the Schofields

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
