What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 16: a laborer (2), an apprentice, a chauffeur, a compositor, a domestic and a longshoreman, among others. Three are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (3), Arbutus Ridge, Downtown, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Shaughnessy, Strathcona, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Sayers (no first name printed) at 1146 Broughton Street. Mrs S Sayers is listed at 630 East Georgia Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Sarah Sayers there as the householder, widow of C M.

H D Sayers is listed at 2591 East Georgia Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Harry D Sayers there as the householder, a waiter at the Devonshire Hotel, with Joe Sayers, an apprentice at A&N Department Store. The 1940 name section lists Sayers (no first name printed) at 962 Howe Street.

In 1940 the directory lists F C Sayers at 1965 Matthews Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Frederick C Sayers there as the householder, a chauffeur, with Eliza Sayers, widow of A. In 1940 the directory lists H A Sayers at 2824 Oxford Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Henry A Sayers there as the householder, a laborer at the National Harbours Board, with Allyn M Sayers, and Marguerite E Sayers, a stenographer for D Gestetner.

In 1940 the directory lists F Sayers at 7460 Prince Edward Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frank Sayers there as the householder, a compositor at the Sun. The 1940 name section lists Jessie L Sayers there as the householder, widow of A J, with Philip A Sayers. In 1940 the directory lists T Sayers at 3206 West 11th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. Today

1965 Matthews, 2824 Oxford, 7460 Prince Edward and 3206 West 11th still have their buildings from before 1946; 2591 East Georgia (2008) and 3455 Turner (1970) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1146 Broughton, 630 East Georgia, 962 Howe, 5904 Vine and 2186 West 33rd, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
